Red Valley Sunset Hike

The Red Valley turns into a living watercolor at sunset. Two hours before the sun drops, the rust-colored cliffs catch the low light and shift through copper, salmon, and deep crimson — the same hues that gave the valley its name. This guided hike takes you along the valley floor, past Byzantine rock-cut churches and pigeon houses carved into the cliffs, to the panoramic ridge above Cavusin where the entire Cappadocia plateau opens up beneath you.

Why hike Red Valley at sunset and not at midday?

The Red Valley is a different place after 4pm. Tour buses have left, the temperature drops to a comfortable walking range, and the rocks — which look pink and unremarkable under harsh noon light — start glowing. Photographers call this the “golden window,” and in Cappadocia it lasts about 90 minutes. Our route is timed so you reach the main viewpoint exactly as the sun touches the horizon over Mount Erciyes.

The route

Pickup is two hours before sunset (the exact time shifts with the season — see below). We drive you to the trailhead near Cavusin, brief you on the route, and start the hike at an easy pace.

Stop 1 — Cavusin village & old church (15 min): A photogenic abandoned village built into the cliffside. The 5th-century Church of St. John the Baptist sits above it, one of the oldest in Cappadocia.

Stop 2 — The valley floor (45 min): A flat trail through orchards and vineyards, with the red cliffs rising on both sides. We pass three rock-cut churches with surviving 11th–13th century frescoes — your guide unlocks the iron gates that protect them.

Stop 3 — Pigeon dovecotes (20 min): Hundreds of small carved holes in the cliff face — pigeon houses used for centuries to collect droppings as fertilizer for the valley’s vineyards.

Stop 4 — The sunset ridge (60–90 min): A short climb to the ridge above Red Valley. We set out blankets, serve tea or Turkish coffee with simit and dried fruit, and watch the sun set over the entire Cappadocia plateau. Mount Erciyes (3,917m) silhouettes against the sky on clear days.

What to bring

Comfortable walking shoes with grip (the trail has loose volcanic gravel). A light jacket — temperatures drop fast after sunset, especially October–April. Water bottle (we provide bottled water but bring a refillable one). Camera or phone. A small headlamp or phone torch helps for the descent — we’re back at the trailhead 20–30 minutes after sunset.

Frequently asked questions

What time does the tour start? Pickup time depends on sunset. In June–July sunset is around 8:30pm, so we pick up at 6:30pm. In December–January sunset is around 4:45pm, so pickup is 2:45pm. We send the exact time the day before with the weather forecast.

Is the hike difficult? The valley floor is flat and easy. The climb to the ridge is short (15 minutes) but steep in places. We rate it “easy to moderate.” It’s not suitable for wheelchair users or strollers. Children 8 and over usually manage well.

Do you cancel for bad weather? We monitor the forecast. Light rain is fine — the cliffs look dramatic in cloudy weather. Heavy rain or thunderstorms means we reschedule to the next clear evening at no extra cost. Cappadocia gets very few rain days even in winter.

Can I do this tour in winter? Yes. Winter sunset hikes are popular because the valley is empty and snow on the red rocks is striking. Sunset is earlier (4:30–5pm), which means you’re back at your hotel for dinner. Bring warmer layers — temperatures can drop below freezing.

How is this different from the daytime Red Tour? The daytime Red Tour visits more sites in a vehicle (Pasabag, Avanos, Goreme Open Air Museum). This sunset hike focuses on one valley, on foot, at the most photogenic time of day. Many guests do both — daytime for the cultural sites, sunset for the landscape and photos.

Can the guide help with photography? Yes. Our guides know the spots and the times. They’ll show you where to stand for the best composition, when to switch from the warm sunset light to the cool blue-hour sky, and how to capture the scale of the valley.
